When arriving in the United States, one of the first things you'll want to do is get a local SIM card for your phone. So that you don't get lost 😉
If you want to buy new phone then you can new phone as well as sim/network with pretty much any carrier.
But if cost optimisation is something you are looking for as i was. Then i will share some information
There two types of plans you can get to your phone
1. Locked Carrier
You buy a plan with your career, then you pay for you network & phone for around 30-60$ /month depending on how expensive is your phone. But you will pay for a long time usually around 36 months for 800-1000$ phone.
2. Unlocked Phone(if you own the phone already):
If you already have an unlocked phone this option is for you,
There is activation fee for the first month , so total for the first month will be 48$ and from the 2nd month it's 15$ a month. you can go to any nearest T-mobile store and get the service going on right away.
You can order this online, plug your sim. Most likely there is similar upfront fee of around 45$.
Initially, i had mint mobile for a quite a long time, but recently i had gone to the T-mobile to setup a sim for my brother who just arrived to USA for his higher studies.
Hopefully, this give you some insights about phone plan.
